Review:
It makes sense for a new duo to recruit a few friends to help them out, but judging by the roll call of indie superheroes that appear on Rubies’ début album, Explode From The Centre, the Californian duo really went overboard with the invitations. Leslie Feist drops in to help out on the lead single, I Feel Electric; Eric Glambek-Boe (of Kings Of Convenience fame) lends his dulcet tones to the proceedings, and Peter, Björn and John stop whistling long enough to add some harmonies. And that’s before you think about Rubies’ live shows, in which Devendra Banhart and Erlend Øye pop up to sing harmonies, or the fact that Explode From The Centre is released by Scandinavian hipster label Tellé. All of which points to the duo’s immense talent: although there are only nine songs on Explode From The Centre, each of them is beautifully-crafted, moving from melancholy folk-pop (Too Bright) through to white-girl funk laced with jagged electro synths (Stand In A Line). As an added bonus, both Simone Rubi and Terri Lowenthal sing like angels, a talent best displayed on the beautiful Silver Mornings or the Joni Mitchell-esque closer, The Truth & The Lies.
